The Sacraments

Baptism

Baptism is the first of the sacraments, and its effects are profound. The deacon or priest pours water over the forehead of the child or adult being baptised. By that sign, he or she is cleansed from sin and adopted as a child of God and a member of Christ’s Church.

If you are planning to have your baby baptised – congratulations on the birth of your child! We look forward to welcoming them into the Church.

Please see Deacon Terry who will talk you through what’s needed and book the date with you and give you the application form to complete and return.

There will be a preparation session with Deacon Terry so that you understand the sacrament and what happens during the service, it also gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have. This is key as we want this to be a really special family day for you as it is a time for celebration and joy.

A question that is often asks is ‘who can be a Godparent?’; all Godparents must be baptised and at least one Godparent must be a confirmed Catholic. It is always a privilege to be a Godparent as Godparents are entrusted by you to help you bring your child(ren) up in the Catholic faith. Usually there are between 2-4 Godparents as relationship with Godparents is a special one.

RCIA

If you are an adult looking to be baptised or if you are baptised in a different Christian denomination and are wanting to become a Catholic then you will be welcome to join an RCIA course to help you discern and ensure you understand our faith and beliefs prior to becoming a member of the Catholic Church.
